Nuova San Martino

Nuova San Martino is located in the Cornia valley, Tuscany, Central Italy.

The installed electric capacity of the plant is 40 MW, with one generating unit and six forced cooling towers. In the frame of the project, one of the towers will be retrofitted to a hybrid configuration, i.e. comprehending one wet and one dry section.

The Nuova San Martino power plant, belonging to Enel Green Power’s geothermal fleet, was build in 2005 in the Lago Geothermal Area. The installed electric capacity is 40 MW, with one generating unit and six forced-draft cooling towers. In the frame of the project, one of the towers will be retrofitted by the project partner SPIG to a hybrid configuration. This hybrid cooling tower will include an innovative dry section, designed with new materials and coatings, while the underneath wet section will be optimized by means of a high-efficiency advanced packing, allowing a drastic reduction of the section height. In this way, the place for the dry section will be saved without increasing the overall height of the tower. The demo module will enable both the traditional wet operation and the innovative hybrid one, with the final purpose of evaluating the robustness of the dry section and the overall cooling efficiency of the tower in the long term and in several operating configurations.
